Joy- are you a dog?

Not a single day passes when we don’t ask Joy if he’s a dog or not because of traits he displays similar to the human..

There is something enigmatic about how dogs (say hi to Joy) behave around objects so simple to the human eye. The clothes lying scrambled on the floor, the birds that seldom chirp and take away a part of their lunch, a knock on the door, the biscuit your hand holds. The way they run hearing something inaudible and yet trying to show us the thing that they have seen. Many articles, many interviews, even more movies had made an image of unconditional love of a dog in my mind. I had seen one in my uncle’s house and was amazed. I always wanted to pet a dog, was always fascinated by those TV ads that showed how a dog and its owner become a single soul.

“Hutch wala kutta” was the thing my parents first said when I declared I wanted a dog. But like other things, deep research went into finding Joy. We zeroed into Labrador and it was decided Joy will be our new family member. Of course, joy has become a family member more quickly than anyone of us could ever imagine. The way everyday he barges into my parents room and whenever he finds it locked, he instructs one of us to open the door. Joy came to us on a hot summer day of August. My father and brother had already seen joy and were busy playing with him. I was told to go and meet him. But I waited. Not because I feared the little pup. But the selfishness of enjoying that feeling when we meet someone for the first time, all by myself relucted me. They were done playing with him. That’s when I went to see him. He was drinking milk from a saucer in which Amma used to serve the guests.” Haha, Amma itna royal treatment.” I commented. Joy had finished drinking milk. I now saw what 26 days of coming to life meant. His eyes were closed and he moved around smelling things. He came around my foot, smelled my slippers, put his tiny head in that slipper and went to sleep. We all started laughing seeing what just had happened.

In the night, joy came and slept around my parents bed. He sleeps where they sleep. And while he sleeps, he dreams. In dreams, he runs, tries to shoo away something we all try to gauge seeing his movements while he sleeps.

I don’t have many pictures of joy because he is a bad poser. Every time you ask him to pose, he will run away. And it could be that whenever I see him, I just play with him leaving beside everything( have been scolded million times for this).

Joy has been the biggest listener to me. He knows about all my secrets, all my misadventures, what I do when no one is around. Many a times I got angry at him, many a times he got angry at me. But everyday just at 8 in the evening, he comes wagging his tail, with sparkling eyes commands me to take him out. I have seen all his shades. The sleepy one, the excited one, the sad one, the angry one, the one where Amma begs him to eat his food, the one where Papa scolds him when he lies aimlessly in the middle of his way, when we say Joy “biscuit”.All, but still joy is an enigma.

This 23rd of July Joy will be 5 years old. 5 years have passed in a blink! His beard has turned white. Today Amma commented when she was going away for some work. ” Amitabh Bacchan jaisi dhadhi Uga Rakhi hai. Kaise kam chalega.” I laughed and joy acknowledged.

I sometimes imagine what life would be after joy because his voice has become addictive. Just like the anger of papa, the bells Amma rings everyday when she prays, my brother calling me “bhaiya”. It would be heartbreaking for all of us, we all know deep down and we don’t discuss it. We don’t fear losing Joy. Because Joy will be always with us. Joy causes us Joy.

I remember Amma had named him Joy…

I now see…… Why

  1. Move away Harsh.. I’m all for Joy. Morning little fellow 😉
I had one little one, a black pomeranian, she came to me as a gift for my first birthday from my parents, and there we were inseparable… we ate together, slept together, went everywhere together.. Life without her seems dull, but then came my two parakeets.. now they are my secret keepers.. they know me, get angry at me, I get angry at them..:) such a joy!

He runs in his dreams, take a video and post! 😀

    1. Hahaha, dogs are just a delight when they are with you. I had a parrot once but that when I was too young. Then my parents brought two rabbits.
But the amount of joy, joy has given me is unaccountable.
Joy says morning. 😉 He came to wake me up and slept again.
I will record him sleeping soon.
      Thank you Ash. 😊

  2. Joy! What a joy he must be! I can understand.

I am not so good with pets. I like them but sadly only from a distance but appreciate them and don’t mind them being around me as long as they do not touch me.

My little one has been asking for a pet( puppy, cat, mouse, gerbil Pata nahi aur kya..). For now I have managed to convince her we can’t bring one home. But I think when she is a bit older she is going to get a pet and hopefully then I can overcome my fears of touching animals and I can be normal around a pup or cat.

    1. I can very well imagine your ordeal Ma’am. The one with the pets and the one where children demand for pets. Believe me, mujhe ladna pda tha joy ko lane ke liye. 😜 it’s very understandable how pets can make you feel especially when they are not your own. Joy is a devil from distant because of his big size. But when you come close, he surrenders completely.
Ma’am, if I may, you can only overcome the fear of an animal if you be in a close environment with them. Believe me it has worked for many of the relatives that have come my home. Initial resilience. But when they are about to leave, they cannot get more of joy.
I wish you best of luck.
Thank you Ma’am for reading, commenting and sharing your views.
      You are a sport.

    1. Thank you Misha. Getting a dog is a whole another level of responsibility. But, one shouldn’t be devoid of it because caring for an animal is just divine. I have felt it. You must too. Bring home a dog. 😊

      1. My parents are not going to get me. -_- So I guess when I become independent. Though that’s a long time but I do have the patience. I mean I have been waiting for years so a few more years won’t be a harm. 🙂

  3. Joy is beautiful! We have had two black lab mixes. We had our first for 12 1/2 years and we are now blessed with Jase (who turns two next week!) As usual, I love the story and your writing style. Excellent!

    1. Thank you so much Sir. I am glad you liked this.
I would really love to know Jase. Do share a post of him, if you may wish.
Every dog out there is beautiful. Don’t you think?

  4. Awww.. He’s such a handsome and cute little fur ball. 🙂 (handsome because he’s a male dog)
I am a pet lover too. Though we do not own a dog, as I did not want the responsibility to take them on walks everyday, we have a cat. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much Ma’am. 😊. Animals are just pure. They don’t say anything and still saya lot.
I like cats too. But my parents allow only dogs as a pet.
Although I will soon be getting another pup.

      1. Awww.. Our neighbors own a dog, white lab. They have named him choco. And choco is scared of cats. 😀
What breed is your next pet going to be? Another lab? Or hutch wala dog? I heard that pugs fall sick very soon as they are delicate. As in, due to their facial structure (obstructed wind pipe or something like that; small nosed), they will have breathing problems.

      2. Haha. A female rottweiler? Then you can cross breed lab and rottweiler. A new breed called rottlab 😉

      3. No no never. I have seen joy around female dogs. He gives me a good upper body workout there and then. I cannot imagine him around a female that is available to him for the entire day. 😅

      4. Haha… I thot two males can’t stand each other. Put two male cats together in a room and in few minutes, satya nash. Isn’t it the same with dogs too?

      5. Joy won’t be a problem. He is always ready to mingle with other dogs around the house. The real problem will be the rottweiler. But I think I can train them to be friends. And agar baat nhi bani ek ghar ke andar, ek bahar.
I had a close encounter once with a cat. She was about a month old and she came at my mother’s clinic. When I came back from school. She jumped on me and tried to lift my hand. I was frightened when I saw its nails coming out. I had seen for the first time that kind of thing. Retracting nails. The only other encounter was with wolverine in the movies. 😅

      6. Haha. Kittens do not have control over their claws. But as they grow up, they hardly try to put out their claws and try to harm, unless someone irritates them.
You can keep dogs out of the house but not cats. Our kitty sleeps on the sofa. She’s been eyeing my bed for a long time now, but I don’t want her to sit wherever she wants.
We had a long conversation over pets. Feels good. Pet lovers only talk about pets and nothing else. Haha 🙂

  5. Both my Labradors have loved me and left me Kumar.
Chelsea was my fat russet furred girl, she was fat like me. When she smiled…even without her teeth in her later years, she made the sun pale in comparison. Her son Lucky was born blonde and beautiful. Chelsea left me to sleep forever, she could wait no longer for me to come from work. It was three years now this last Saturday that she passed. Her son Lucky passed too. He had separation anxiety, missed his Mom, hated that he was alone when we worked and the children schooled. He got cancer and I had to make the decision to say goodbye, he was really sick. I wanted no more pets after. Raw with emotion, we cried and eventually, we kept quiet. Until my husband and son rescued a tawny kitten who is now my son, Leo. He rules and my daughter is convinced she should have been named a Russian Ivan. Leo was lonely and rescued another kitty, he hid him in the garden for a week. We thought we saw a rabbit hop. Nope. So in came Snosey, who looks like the Kung Fu Panda character, all attitude bristling. No one is allowed to touch him besides me, I think he is partial to my Indian Head Massages. Finally, I think finally, my husband rescued Jag from certain death. Jag is my last born and my little Jaguar. He is beautiful, all of them. So yes, I have four sons including my 17yr old Owen,
    From dogs to cats…
    PS.
I feed four strays at the office complex, they literally wait for me, my welcoming committee that makes working worthwhile, I think sometimes I work only for pet food! Its my labour of love, Kumar.

    1. Wow Kavitha, this story of yours has touched me, maybe because we both have been blessed with pets. Its painful to see them go but I think that their unconditional love is what just makes this worth so much more. About those street dogs, I can very well see what you feel. I too have a welcoming party right at my doorstep. 😛 Thank you so much for this comment. This has made me smile ear to ear. 😊
